This tutorial demonstrates a quick method to paint Black Templar Space Marines for tabletop readiness using zenithal priming and contrast paints. It then shows how to elevate the paint scheme further with additional highlighting and detailing techniques for various parts of the miniature.
Steps
Preparation
2 steps-
1. Prime the model with black primer.

2. Spray white primer from above to give a zenithal technique.
Flat White Primer Rust-Oleum
Power Armour
-
Paint Black Templar Contrast paint all over the model, focusing on one part at a time to avoid tide marks, being careful around the shoulder parts to leave them as light as possible.

Weapon Casings (Red Base)
-
Paint Flesh Tearers Red fairly thick over the weapon casings (heavy bolter pistol and chainsword blade) to make use of the zenithal prime underneath.

Leather Parts (Brown Base)
-
Use Garaghak's Sewer to paint the leather parts, such as hanging tabards and pouches, creating a nice dark brown leather effect.

White Shoulder Pads & Purity Seals (Base)
-
If the shoulder pads are not bright enough from the prime, cover them with Ulthuan Grey. Also use Ulthuan Grey to paint the paper parts of purity seals and if the wax is a bit too dark.

Eye Lenses (Base)
-
While Ulthuan Grey is on the palette, use it to paint the eye lenses.

Eye Lenses (Red Base) & Purity Seal Wax (Red Base)
2 steps-
1. Once the Ulthuan Grey is dry, use Blood Angels Red Contrast paint to paint the eye lenses.

Gold Ornaments (Base)
-
Paint the Aquila, the Indomitus Crusader icon on the left forearm, and any other ornamental parts with Canoptek Alloy. Apply fairly thick and apply a second coat if needed.

Gold Ornaments (Shade)
-
To make the Canoptek Alloy stand out, paint Agrax Earthshade all over it, letting it run into the recesses (or paint it directly to the recesses if using the old formula).

Silver Metallics (Base)
-
Base all silver metallics, including the vents on the backpack, the chainblade teeth and casing, the exhaust on the chainblade, the working parts on the heavy bolter pistol, and the tubes on the face mask, with Leadbelcher.

Silver Metallics (Shade)
-
To give the silver metal some definition, paint Nuln Oil all over the silver parts (thin with Contrast Medium for a lighter effect or use straight from the pot for a darker metallic).

Silver Metallics (Highlight)
-
Highlight all silver parts by ensuring a good point on the brush and catching the raised edges of the model to get nice, crisp, shiny highlights.

Red Weapon Casings (Highlight)
-
Highlight all weapon casings by catching the raised edges to get really nice, crisp, bright red lines.

Leather (Highlight)
-
Highlight the leather parts by focusing on the raised elements with Mournfang Brown for a nice, crisp, thin highlight and a warm effect.

Eye Lenses (White Dot)
-
To make the eyes glow a little more, take Bold Titanium White and paint it into the center of that eye lens.
Bold Titanium White Pro Acryl
Eye Lenses (Red Glow - Second Pass)
-
Once the white dot is dry, go back to Blood Angels Red and paint it over the white dot to give a much brighter effect.

Power Armour (Highlight)
-
To make the armor pop, highlight the raised panels and edges of the plates with Thunderhawk Blue, focusing on key areas rather than every single edge.

Shoulder Pad Recesses (Optional Weathering)
-
(Optional) Use Skeleton Horde to paint inside the lines between the white and black parts of the shoulder pad. If too much is applied, clean the brush and thin it down with water to wash it around, creating a dirty effect.
