This tutorial demonstrates how to paint a Terran Marine miniature from the StarCraft tabletop game by Archon Studios, focusing on the box art blue color scheme. Key techniques include base coating, applying washes for shading, layering to clean up flat panels, and highlighting edges for definition, with optional steps for painting the face or a translucent visor.

Steps

Preparation

  1. Prime the miniature using a medium grey spray. The example miniature has its visor flipped up for face painting, but it can also be glued down and primed with the rest of the model.

Power Armour

  1. Thin the paint with a touch of water. Apply two thin coats of Witching Hour Blue to block in all the power armour plating, working it into all nooks and crannies.

Silver Details

  1. Thin the paint with a touch of water and remove excess from the brush. Apply two thin coats of Sir Coates Silver to pick out small details like armour joints and weapon components. Don't worry about surrounding details yet.

Weapon Casing

  1. Thin the paint with water. Apply two thin coats of Death Reaper to block in the main casing of the weaponry, being careful around the silver and blue areas.

Leather Details

  1. Apply two thin coats of Noble Steed Brown to the leather holster.

Weapon Red Details

  1. Apply two thin coats of Asmodeus Red to the small red details on the weaponry, such as the small features around the weapon's body.

All-Over Wash

  1. Load a generous amount of Oblivion Black Wash onto a large brush. Apply it over all the painted areas (except the face/visor), working it into all recesses. If it collects in flat panels, use the brush like a sponge to redistribute the excess. Allow 45 minutes to dry. Apply two thin coats.

Face (Optional)

5 steps
  1. 1. Thin the paint with water. Apply two thin coats of Barbarian Brawn to block in the deeper skin tone, pointing the brush straight at the miniature and carefully introducing the color to the flesh areas, avoiding surrounding armor.

  2. 2. Thin the paint. Apply two thin coats of Dwarven Skin to pick out the raised features of the face, starting with the center of the nose, then the brow, and moving down towards the cheekbones, carefully avoiding recesses like the eyes.

  3. 3. Thin the paint. Apply two thin coats of Elven Skin to highlight the sharpest features of the face: the center of the nose, a little around the nostrils, a line on the brow and one or two lines for forehead wrinkles, and the cheekbone.

  4. 4. Thin the paint to an inky consistency. Run a line of Doom Death Black into the deepest recess of each eye. Apply two thin coats.

Blue Armour Layering

  1. Thin the paint with water. Reapply two thin coats of Witching Hour Blue, focusing on the raised, smooth panels of the armour and carefully avoiding recesses to retain the shading.

Red Details Layering

  1. Thin the paint with water. Reapply two thin coats of Asmodeus Red onto the red areas, being careful to avoid any recesses.

Blue Armour Soft Shading (Optional)

  1. Mix Abyss Blue with a good amount of water to create a very thin, runny glaze. Apply two thin coats to the bottoms of armour panels or areas that would be in shadow, such as the underside of round parts. Apply a second thin coat a little further down, and a third right at the very bottom, creating a gradient.

Blue Armour Highlighting

2 steps
  1. 1. Thin the paint with water so it flows easily. Apply two thin coats of Elysium Blue as an edge highlight, looking for all edges and angles on the armour. Use the side of the brush close to the tip, or the tip itself for tight areas, to get a sharp, bright blue line.

  2. 2. Thin the paint. Apply two thin coats of Celestial Blue as a further edge highlight to areas that stand out more, such as sharper corners or parts that catch the light, including the crest on the helmet.

Silver Details Highlighting

  1. Thin the paint with water. Apply two thin coats of Mythril Blade as an edge highlight to all edges and corners on the silver details, using the side or tip of the brush as needed.

Weapon Casing Highlighting

  1. Thin the paint with water. Apply two thin coats of Dungeon Stone Grey as an edge highlight to the sharp edges and corners on the black weapon details, such as the top casing of the rifle.

Leather Details Highlighting

  1. Thin the paint with water. Apply two thin coats of Sandstone by dotting it slightly onto the leather details to create the appearance of textured or cracked leather.

Weapon Red Details Highlighting

  1. Thin the paint with water. Apply two thin coats of Evil Eye Red as an edge highlight to the small red details on the rifle, gently following each edge and angle.

Visor (Clear Plastic Option)

  1. If using a clear plastic visor, clean it thoroughly. Note the non-symmetrical back and orient it correctly. Glue it onto the miniature using a little PVA glue in the back corners. Do not use super glue or plastic glue, as they will damage the plastic or paint.

Visor (Painted Option)

5 steps
  1. 1. If painting the visor, ensure it has been primed with a grey primer. Apply two to three thin coats of Dragon's Gold to basecoat the entire visor smoothly.

  2. 2. Thin the paint with water. Apply a single thin coat of Orange Glaze over the entire visor to give it an orange tint. (Alternatively, use a heavily thinned orange contrast paint.)

  3. 3. Thin the paint with water. Apply Flesh Wash towards the bottom of the visor, where it meets the blue armour, to create deeper shading and depth.

  4. 4. Heavily water down Dragon's Gold to a thin glaze. Apply a thin coat towards the top of the visor, going just past halfway down, to highlight the upper portion.
